One of the most often neglected activities while closing deals is SMILE. It may sound very insignificant but it is very important during sales. When you smile to a customer, he or she feels welcomed and loved. Smile is the only charm that will constantly make a customer return to your shop or patronise your services and even recommend others to do same.
In fact, if you don’t know how to smile and say THANK YOU, either you learn how to do so or forget about opening a shop or rendering any service because you will end up having low patronage because you are not friendly or seen to be so by customers. Many people think that all they need is to have a competitive price of products, wrong!, nobody like to be in the front of a rude or unfriendly sales person no matter how affordable his/her wares/services are.
Some sales persons especially in the retail sector in Nigeria are in the habit of asking customers if they “HAVE CHANGE” than say “WELCOME”. They see it as the duty of customers who are spending their money to patronise their products to look for change which is absolutely wrong. Even if you want that to happen as a sales person, there are ways to communicate such a message to your customers without being offensive.
How can you greet a customer with “Do you have change?” all the time and you want him to come patronise you always? You must be dreaming.
Also, one thing that some sales people lack is the usage of the words “THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATRONAGE”. This expression will usually spur return of such customers especially if you sell quality brand/products or services.
Finally, now that the festive season is in full gear, I know you will be getting a lot of patronage, please and please, don’t take any customer for granted. Take their contact details if you can, be FRIENDLY, endeavour to treat them nice and if possible give gifts no matter how little and don’t forget to wear a big SMILE!.
Enjoy your holiday.
